Mrs. Mary Mifsud is a professional Occupational Therapist

Specializing in manual handling practice with work experience in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and the aged care industry including rehabilitation, manual handling coordination and practice and H&S. She also has several years experience in Quality Management Systems.

 

 

Rationale of the Course

 

The Worker’s EHS Certificate has been developed with the employee in mind. This course is structured on 4 modules:

o   Module 1: Introduction to EHS

o   Module 2: Preventing Accidents

o   Module 3: Working Safely

o   Module 4: Manual Handling

 

These 4 modules will enable employees to understand what is expected from them by their employers in terms of working safely and in a responsible manner that protects the environment. It will provide them with an EHS Overview of several environmental, health and safety principles to ensure they work safely protecting not only themselves but also their colleagues and the environment. This will be achieved through the use of practical examples, simple exercises, games & videos, discussion & Q&A time with the trainer.

 

By the end of Module 4: Manual Handling, employees will  understand why correct manual handling techniques are a valuable tool in everyday routine activities and to view good manual handling practices as a tools to prevent injuries at the workplace. Attendees will be evaluated individually to be shown the correct technique and posture required to handle correctly.

 

For Whom

 

 

This training is intended for any employee, not in a managerial or supervisory level, from the public or private sectors, including manufacturing and service industries, hospitals & care providers especially those identified at being at risk of injury from problems related to inappropriate manual handling from repetitive work, prolonged seating or standing, working in harsh climate or temperature conditions, handling of patients etc.  The course content is designed to suit audiences from different backgrounds and job or professional aspects.

 

Entry requirements: None

 

Note: Although this is considered as Module 4 of the Worker’s EHS Certificate, this module can be chosen as a standalone session for employees and does not require completion of modules 1, 2 & 3 of the Worker’s EHS Certificate. Please speak to FHRD and indicate whether you wish to opt for this session only.

 

Course Aims and Objectives

 

Aim

 

To enable the audience to acquire basic manual handling techniques to enable safe manual handling practices

 

Objectives

 

·         To understand the meaning of manual handling

·         To understand how our body works in relation to manual handling

·         To understand the difference between correct and incorrect body posture, positioning, lifting, carrying etc

·         To enable the audience to practice what is a good and appropriate manual handling technique.

 

Course Content

 

Module 4: Manual Handling

·         Introduction to Manual Handling

 

·         Understanding the legal obligation in relation to manual handling in the health and safety legislation

 

·         Understanding what manual handling is

 

·         Understand how our body works in relation to manual handling and problems that can arise from inappropriate manual handling

 

·         Factors leading to manual handling injuries

 

·         Learn what is correct lifting and what is considered as inappropriate manual handling

 

·         Learn the basic: Principles of manual handling

 

·         Practice what is safe lifting.

Learning Facilitation

 

This training is meant to be very interactive & participants are free to share their experiences and ask questions at any time.

·         Practical session: Practicing good lifting techniques

·         Exploring individual issues with manual handling at the work place

·         Perform a manual handling assessment from practical examples of the participant’s work place.

Certificate

A Certificate of attendance will only be awarded to those participants who attend a minimum of 80% of tuition.
