FHRD recognises innovation, best HR practices
On December 2, the Foundation for Human Resource Development held its annual HR Awards Ceremony at the Radisson SAS Bay Point Resort, St Julian's. The ceremony was opened with a welcoming speech by FHRD CEO Maria Pia Chircop, followed by an opening speech by foundation president John Muscat Drago.
Francis A. Borg, permanent secretary at the Ministry for Education, Youth and Employment, presented the recognition tokens and awards, and closed the ceremony on behalf of Employment Minister Louis Galea, who was unable to attend.
This year's ceremony aimed at awarding:
a) the Best HR Initiative based on innovation and creativity to five companies, each one hailing from the manufacturing, hospitality, retail and services industries, and government departments/agencies; and
b) Excellence in People Management, based on best HR practices to as many organisations that would have achieved the criteria set by the FHRD.
Four companies submitted their nominations for these awards: Ernst & Young, HSBC Bank Malta plc, Malta Information Technology and Training Services (MITTS) Ltd and Methode Electronics Malta Ltd. The FHRD recognised these companies for their participation.
The judging committee was composed of Edmund Tabone, chairperson, Dr Andrew Borg Cardona, Mario Grixti, Anne Marie Thake, Joe Vella Bonnici and Joshua Zammit.
The Best HR Initiative was awarded to HSBC Bank Malta plc for the implementation of a Diversity Strategy and Policy, and its continuing work on diversity. Shaun Wallis, HSBC Bank Malta CEO said: "In taking forward the development of diversity, we will be seeking to ensure all staff, irrespective of gender, have the opportunity for equal career development, compensation and encouragement."
Mary Louis Agius, diversity manager at HSBC Bank Malta, in delivering her presentation during the ceremony, explained the Diversity Strategy Action Plan taken by HSBC Bank Malta, which includes Childcare Subsidy, the Springboard Programme, revised internal recruitment procedures, personal development plans for staff, flexible working hours, Harassment Policy and customers/staff with different needs.
The Excellence in People Management (Malta) was awarded to MITTS Ltd. For this award, non-managerial staff members gave their feedback through an anonymous questionnaire. Thus, results were matched with the management report.
During the award ceremony Mr Muscat Drago recognised Helga Ellul, FHRD honorary president, for her continuous support to the FHRD and Frank Pullicino for his support to the HR community in Malta during his sterling career as Director of Industrial and Employment Relations. Both received a certificate of recognition.
The FHRD would like to thank the participating companies and the sponsors, Bank of Valletta plc and Vodafone, for the event's success.
