The trauma of job loss
Losing a job is more than a financial issue. When one is faced with the trauma of a job loss, the person can go through mild distress, but can also be devastated. Initially, individuals can become too overwhelmed to function.
Feelings of anger, guilt, resentfulness, powerlessness, humiliation and exhaustion are only a few of the many feelings that come into play. Some people can regain emotional balance by solving their problems after a short time. They can also come out of adversities stronger and better.
Others feel crushed and fall into a state of isolation and confusion, depression, anxiety, and problems of drugs, alcohol and illnesses. Physical symptoms, like sudden weight loss, headaches, hypertension and ulcers, are the usual signs.
When symptoms persist and interfere with the daily routine, individuals would require to seek and receive professional support and assistance to rise to the surface.
To reach out to those who are suffering from such a trauma, the Foundation for Human Resources Development (FHRD), in partnership with Richmond Foundation, is organising a half-day seminar on "Dealing with the trauma of a job loss" on September 27 at Malta Enterprise, Marsa.
The keynote speaker at the seminar is Dott. Edward Curmi, B.Psych; Dott.in Psi. Clinica (Padova), a licensed clinical psychologist specialising in individual and group psychotherapy, especially in the field of mental illness. During the seminar, delegates will have the opportunity to share their feelings and anxieties in small groups facilitated by qualified personnel from the Richmond Foundation.
The event is supported by Malta Enterprise, which is sponsoring the venue, so participation is free, and by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), who will be informing all unemployed people of the event. Proceedings will be conducted in Maltese. Bookings are to be made by calling the FHRD on 2137-8895.
